While the Red Cross provides some preliminary materials and suggestions, a preparedness party is all about sharing common knowledge and better cultivating a state of mind towards emergency preparations, according to Northern Colorado American Red Cross Executive Director Erin Mounsey.

Mounsey said modern perceptions of preparedness and “preppers” starkly contradict those from just decades ago, when preparedness was just a way of life. With the smoke of the 87,250-acre High Park Fire last summer still fresh in Northern Colorado’s mind, Mounsey is urging residents to think about getting prepared before another catastrophic disaster hits.“In the old days, it was just a natural thing to be prepared,” he said. “We’re trying to bring that normalcy back toward emergency preparedness.

”Some steps are simple: copying important documents such as insurance information, a home inventory and property records; knowing the numbers of family and friends if phone lines are down; and getting to know your neighbors.  Think of it like doing regular maintenance on your car or keeping your pantry stocked — it’s a continual mindset of being prepared,” Mounsey said.

“Preparedness is not a destination,” added party participant Jeff Jensen. “It’s something you maintain over time and if you’re doing it right, you’ll never be done.”
